Finzi said he explicitly borrowed the Forlana dance form from Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin. This fast traditional dance is from Fruili in north-eastern Italy, with the most famous city being Udine. Finzi is of Italian (Jewish) descent, yet he wrote the piece in the quintessential English pastoral tradition.
